Owned, powered by Unix Gaming, is giving gamers a new way to monetize with Battle Tech, a rich SocialFi layer for gamers, fans, and “backers” who hold passes. Launching on February 14th, Battle Tech incorporates the “keys” seen in the recent wave of viral SocialFi apps, and even bridges these SocialFi elements to Web2 gaming.

Battle Tech blends SocialFi, Web2 gaming, and Web3 gaming in a novel way. Gamers will sign up on Battle Tech and create a Player Pass. This pass is what their backers can trade to have a stake in the future of their competitive gaming, just like the keys in other SocialFi apps. 

Critically, Battle Tech will integrate with popular games via Steam and FaceIt, allowing players to port over their gaming history data, confirming their previous track records. The idea is to further empower gamers and fans via decentralized esports with intricate social elements. 

Owned and Battle Tech are funded and built by Unix Gaming, which raised $30M in 2021 to help build gaming’s Web3 future. The $UNIX token has also migrated to Avalanche and will support the Owned and Avalanche ecosystems. In the future, Owned plans to launch an Avalanche Subnet and harness their unique game-friendly customizations, helping transition gamers from Web2 to Web3. 

Battle Tech aims to kick off on February 14th, with Counter-Strike 2. Several other hit games are also in the pipeline, including Dota2 and Web3 favorites.

“Battle Tech will provide players who have poured their hearts and souls into a game for years a new way to make money playing the games they love,” said Ryan Day, chief executive of Owned. “Backers will be able to find-up-and-coming competitive talent and help fund these esports players so they can go full time. And the backers are incentivized to find early talent because as the player grows and succeeds, the player’s winnings go back into the price of their player passes”

One of the social innovations of Battle Tech is that fans can win with players. Passes are tied to player profiles, which act as a proxy for player performance. Battle Tech will track the in-game stats of players so backers can easily follow performance. Additionally, when pass sales occur, gamers will earn a cut of transaction revenue. Further, Battle Tech introduces a new mechanism to raise pass prices without requiring someone to buy or sell a pass. When a player or team competes in a Battle Tech tournament, the prize is split between the player and the pass holders. Pass holders don’t get the funds directly. Rather, the prize pool is put into the liquidity pool of the player or team pass.

Owned is launching Battle Tech on the heels of Game League, a platform that onboards gamers to Web3 for the first time through tournaments and quests. To date, Game League has attracted some 13,000 players and awarded $1.4 million in prizes to users.
